This tour will take you first to visit the picturesque town of Tule, where the charming local church is dwarfed by an enormous Ahuehuete tree, which has been calculated to be more than 2,000 years old, and is the widest tree in the world. You will also be able to enjoy delicious Oaxacan cuisine, such as traditional mole empanadas. The tour continues to the town of Teotitlán del Valle, in which you will have the opportunity to experience the artisanal process in which wool tapestries, dyed with natural pigments, are made. You will also be able to talk with the local artisans, and purchase directly from them if you wish to bring home one of these traditional works of art. Finally, we will visit the archeological site Mitla, known as “the city of the dead.” The ruins there are made up of a unique architecture made from thousands of tiny stones formed into symmetrical patterns or grecas. In the town of Mitla, you have the opportunity to admire handmade linen clothing and enjoy a Oaxacan nieve, or sorbet.

Admire the beauty of Dominican architecture in Cuilapan. In this historic ex-convent, Gen. Vincente Guerrero, a hero of the struggle for Mexican independence, was executed by firing squad in 1831. The next stop on this tour is Arrazola, a town famous for crafting alebrijes, whimsically-carved, colorful wooden figures that are a traditional art form in Oaxaca. Ocote wood is carefully shaped to give form to mythological and fantastical creatures, born from the dreams of their creators, and adorned with bright colors. Here you will experience the alebrije crafting process, and have the opportunity to purchase these tiny statues directly from the artisans who make them. Finally, delight in the flavors of Zaachila at a traditional market.
